CHURCH HIKE
The St. Barnabas church hiking group was underway on Saturday 9th October. We completed the Middlewood Way from Adlington to Macclesfield having walked the first half from Marple to Adlington in August. Distance covered was approximately 11 miles. Return from Macclesfield was along the towpath of the Macclesfield Canal. Eleven members plus three dogs turned out in brilliant weather

Our next hike is scheduled for early December when it is proposed to undertake the Lyme Park triangle from the Hall to East Lodge then South Lodge and back to the hall.

CHURCH HIKE - LATHKILL DALE - 17TH AUGUST 2003

On this occasion only 8 members attended. A number of people were away on holiday. The weather was glorious and the scenery grand.

The starting point was Moor Lane car park and picnic centre Youlegreave in the White Peak district of the National Park, from where we dropped down to the River Bradford. The river was followed to Alport village, where just beyond we picked up a trail to the River Lathkill joining it at Conksbury Bridge, where the Dale proper commences. Lathkill Dale is approximately 3 miles long to its confluence with Cales Dale and Fern Dale. It is owned by "English Nature" and is regarded as their flagship dale. The River Lathkill is reputed to be Derbyshire's cleanest and purest river and is home to lots of trout which can easily be spotted.

Our route took us into Cales Dale from where we climbed a rock saircase comprising 172 steps out of the valley and up to Calling Low Farm then across a number of fields to the car park.

Our next hike is planned for the 4th October when it is hoped to visit the summit of Bleaklow from the Snake Pass in the Dark Peak. A detour will be made to Shelf Rocks to view the wreck site of the 1952 Super Fortress plane crash, and pay homage at the memorial which was erected in recent years.
