VICAR OR PRIEST
At ordination a person is given authority by the Bishop to exercise
the authority of a priest. This means they can celebrate the service
of Holy Communion, administer the rite of Baptism, preach the Word,
grant absolution of sins, give the blessing and solemnize Holy Matrimony.
CHURCH WARDENS
There are usually two churchwardens. They are elected each year
at the Annual General Meeting. Their main duties are to oversee
the finances of the church and to care for its fabric and furnishings.
PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCILLORS
These are elected at an annual meeting of those church members aged
18 years and over whose names appear on the Electoral Roll of the
Parish. Parochial church councillors meet at regular intervals with
the rest of the Parochial church council members and co-operate
in the running of church matters.
DEANERY SYNOD REPS.
These are elected at the annual meeting to serve together with the
clergy of the Rural Deanery.
LAY READER AND PARISH WORKER
These are people who have been licensed by the Bishop to conduct
religious services, preach sermons, assist in the distribution of
Communion and with the agreement of the family can officiate at
funerals. At St. Barnabas' the Lay Reader and the Parish Worker
have also been granted permission by the Bishop to distribute previously
consecrated communion elements (bread and wine) at Sunday worship
in the absence of the vicar.
