WHO CAN GET MARRIED AT ST. BARNABAS’ CHURCH?
Under present law you can be married at St. Barnabas’ church :

  • If either the Bride or the Bridegroom lives in the parish or if the Bride or the Bridegroom are on the electoral roll of the parish (To be on the electoral roll, six months regular attendance at Sunday service is required)
  • Bride and Bridegroom must have been baptised.
  • Divorced persons cannot marry at St. Barnabas’ if a former spouse is still alive, but a church blessing of the marriage after a civil ceremony can be arranged.

WHAT ARE BANNS?
If a person from St. Barnabas’ Parish wishes to marry in another Parish then Banns must be called at St. Barnabas’ church. Banns are a legal announcement to the Parish that someone is about to be married. They have to be called within three months of the wedding. After hearing the Banns anyone is free to object to the wedding, BUT only on the grounds that the Bride or Bridegroom are under 16 or that one or both of them are already married. The Banns are called on three consecutive Sundays at the main worship service of the day (Usually the 10a.m. service). The cost of Banns includes reading them out and a Banns certificate is £25.00 (2002 price)

WHAT WILL A CHURCH WEDDING COST?
The basic cost for a wedding at St. Barnabas’ is £219 - this includes the fee for the organist. We do not charge for the taking of photographs or a video of the wedding. If you require the church to be decorated e.g. with special floral displays or with flowers of a certain colour then you must pay for these and make your own arrangement for these to be done. You can have access to the church the evening before the wedding or on the wedding day to decorate it.

OTHER ARRANGEMENTS
You can have a traditional or a modern service according to the wishes of the Bride and Bridegroom. Your friends are free to throw confetti at you (you might not like it but we don’t mind!)

St. Barnabas’ Church is near to Vernon Park (1/2 mile) which is an ideal location for photographs and is a short walk from Bredbury Hall which has Banqueting facilities for weddings.
